Sony announced its Next Generation Portable (NGP) handheld gaming device earlier this year, a successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP). The all new Sony NGP (aka PSP2) features a 5-inch OLED screen with a 960 x 544 Resolution and more powerful processor as compared to its predecessor. It has bottom-mounted multi-touch interface, front- and rear-facing cameras, dual analog sticks, twin analog thumbsticks, and a touchpad on back of the device.

Sony NGP/PSP2 will come later this year and will be powered by quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor and quad-core PowerVR SGX534MP4+ GPU. Other specs include built-in GPS, 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Sony NGP measures 7.2 inches long, 3.3 inches wide and 0.73 inches thick, making it slightly bigger than PSP-3000 (6.6-by-2.8-by-0.63 inches). But no details are released on how heavy the new NGP would be. Sony promise to deliver the ultimate portable gaming experience with this new handheld device. Amazing combination of buttons, joysticks, gyroscopes and touch screen will allow to play all types of portable gaming you can imagine today. The biggest competitor to Sony NGP is Nintendo’s upcoming 3DS system.

In an interview with MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President Andrew House has spoken about Sony’s plans for upcoming NGP/PSP2. House said “One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP. Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally. Not necessarily all games have to be made available physically. And having the option of a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking, and that’s because you don’t-have that in-built risk of physical inventory.” He also added, “What I’d like to see is a hierarchy of different games of different sizes. So at the high-end you’ve got these big, premium games, which by and large will be available physically because that is the most convenient way to access them. And then there’s an opportunity for digital-only, where we might see more experimentation.”
