Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept launched at Geneva Motor Show
Porsche, automotive manufacturer of luxury high performance automobiles brings a new plug-in hybrid concept called 918 Spyder at 2010 Geneva Motor Show. 918 Spyder super car concept can accelerate to 320km/h while using less fuel than a Prius. This car is not like earlier average hybrid cars i.e Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. It’s a revolutionary addition in field of car technology.

918 Spyder concept features an emissions level of just 70 grams/km CO2 combined with fuel consumption of three litres/100 km and it can do Nordschleife in less than 7:30 minutes. Porsche 918 concept offers performance of a thoroughbred super sports car on fuel consumption of just three litres/100 km. It uses V8 engine and electric motors for each axle, which produces an additional 218 hp or 160kW. It also has a button on steering wheel, which allows driver to choose between four modes. In this Hybrid mode, car uses both electric motors and combustion engine. In E-Drive mode, car can run under electric power alone, with a range of up to 25 km or 16 miles.
Sport Hybrid mode adds more nerve to system, using Torque Vectoring to improve car’s dynamics further. Last mode is Race Hybrid mode, in which hybrid system becomes a push-to-pass system and helps to boost power for overtaking. Power is transmitted to wheels by a seven speed Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) that feeds power of electric drive system to rear axle. Behind passenger cell a energy reservoir is positioned, which is a fluid-cooled lithium-ion battery. Main benefit of this concept is that, battery can be charged on regular electrical network. Its modular structure is made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic and with right use of magnesium and aluminum, it’s weight is less than 1,490 kg or 3,285 lb.
Its interior architecture is absolutely stunning, which we may see in super sports cars of future. Driver and passenger can perfectly embedded in contoured sports bucket seats. 918 Spyder also supports touch-sensitive surface for intuitive control of car’s functions. It has a three-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel, which enables driver to call up various drive programs.
This latest new plug in hybrid concept by Porsche also includes Range Manager function. Range Manager uses maps and shows remaining range and allows driver to influence that range through choice of power and performance. Driver can choose his personal style of driving as well as right battery charge and filling strategy. This plug-in hybrid concept, 918 Spyder gives a superb combination of extremely low fuel consumption, brilliant performance and long electric range.
