It’s been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we’re announcing a new project that’s a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It’s …

In spite of the iPhone’s in-your-face success, it still lacks one feature most other smartphones embrace as standard - the ability to run more than one application at a time, with the unused process hiding in the background.
Apple has long said it doesn’t want its pride and joy to use PC-like background processes, seeing them as a battery-suck and a security liability if left running unseen.
Push not enough
To that end, it has made very public efforts to instead allow the iPhone to quietly receive notifications from the network for some …

There’s a lot of speculation (not to mention misconceptions) flying around about VMware’s recent move towards the “Cloud”. Critics believe it to be absolute rubbish, a step back to the age of the mainframe, warning us of the dangers of centralized data storage and the security/availability issues that might bring about. “Only your own PC is safe enough for your data.” Proponents counter these arguments by quoting the numerous applications that people use that basically require no more than a dumb terminal anyway. For example, our readers wouldn’t technically need …

Introduction
With all of the attention on dual core processors lately, it has been real easy to overlook the one application that might benefit more from multiple cores than any other; Linux. OK, so technically Linux isn’t an application, but the kernel has supported SMP for nine years almost to the date. The road to SMP has not been an easy one for Linux, but in the last nine years, and particularly since 1999, Linux has received quite the attention as a 2-8 processor core operating system. If you need a …
